Kids Judo

What Is Judo?

Translated as “The Gentle Way,” Judo is a Japanese martial art that teaches throwing and grappling techniques, both standing and on the ground.  Jigaro Kano refined Judo from his knowledge of traditional jujitsu, in 1882.  Since then, it has spread around the world and grown in popularity, becoming an Olympic sport in 1964, and the second most popular sport in the world.  Judo is practiced by many famous fighters, including Ronda Rousey, Kayla Harrison, and Vitor Belfort.

What does Judo do for My Kid?

The kids program at the Des Moines Judo & Sambo Academy has an established history of imparting important ideals and values to children as young as six years old. Not only do children learn techniques valuable for defending themselves and circumventing problems with bullies, they also build confidence, discipline and control.

Judo is also an excellent work out that teaches children to enjoy exercise and value fitness. It is unparalleled in helping develop reflexes and balance, while assisting in the natural development of muscles and helping to build up the cardio-vascular system. Unlike team sports, where each team member spends part of their time on the bench, Judo keeps children active the entire time, meaning they’re getting more exercise.

Give Your Kid the Winning Advantage!

In Judo, each child’s success is based on his or her own individual qualities. When your child experiences victory, it’ll be because they tried, struggled, and overcame their obstacles. Knowing that their own ambition and hard work will drive them to succeed, they will be motivated to follow their dreams.

They’ll also benefit from the opportunity to compete, where kids can test their skills and show their progress. Competition instills a sense of respect for their opponent, as well as motivation to do better the next time. Each Judo tournament is a fresh start, and it is seldom that you get only one match, meaning tournament offers an immediate chance to improve and try again.
